How to Identify if Your Roof Has Hail Damage

If you’ve been living in West Texas, Eastern New Mexico, or Oklahoma for a while, odds are you are no stranger to severe thunderstorms. With these storms often come large waves of damaging hail which can wreak havoc on your home’s roof. In these cases, it’s important to assess the damage quickly to see what next steps you need to take as a homeowner. Here are signs you should look for after a hailstorm to identify if your roof has suffered damage.

Look for Cracks, Dents, or Marks on Your Roof

With this method, it’s important to remember that each type of roofing material will display hail damage differently. You should be able to spot some of these signs from the ground, but some might require closer inspection of the roof itself. It is NOT recommended you climb on your own roof, especially after it’s been damaged. If you believe there is evidence of damage to your roof and need a closer look, call us, at J Ferg Pros, for a full inspection!

Asphalt Roof

Asphalt shingles can display hail damage in a variety of ways. If the hail is strong enough, then it can damage the rough granules coating the shingles. This can usually be seen as a darker, smoother spot on the shingle. Missing granule coating on your shingles should not be taken lightly as it means the protective structure of the shingle has been compromised. If left unchecked, this can lead to many more issues down the road. Depending on the age and state of your shingles, the hail might be able to completely crack the shingles.

Metal Roof

It’s often much easier to spot hail damage on metal roofs. Look for any type of dent, small or large, that may be covering your roof. Strong hailstorms can even warp the metal.

Clay Tile Roof

Clay tile is loved as a roofing material because of its durability. This material can stand up extremely well to hail and usually only shows hail damage in small cracks or chips. However, if the hailstorm is strong enough, entire clay shingles can break.

Examine Gutters

Your gutters can be a clear sign that your roof suffered damage from a recent hailstorm. In fact, your gutters or downspouts are a great first place to check, because they can often give you an idea of what kind of damage your roof may have suffered. If your gutters have dents, then it is likely the hail was powerful enough to cause damage to your roof as well. If your roof is made of asphalt shingles, then your gutters can also be clogged with granules that may have been scuffed off.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Hail Damage on Your Roof

If you notice any of the above signs on your own roof, then you need to call the professionals right away. Unchecked hail damage can grow and cause many other issues to your entire home – not just the roof. Depending on how bad the hail damage is and what kind of insurance coverage you have, you might be able to have your roof repaired with little to no cost to you.
