How to Choose A Roofing Contractor

Looking for a roofing contractor? With so many roofers to choose from, it might seem difficult to narrow down your options, let alone choose one. Before starting your search, remember to consider these factors when choosing a roofing contractor!

Services Offered

Not all roofing contractors are the same. As such, certain contractors may not provide the services you’re looking for. It’s always crucial that you review what services are offered on their page. In some cases, you may need to call and clarify if they offer any extras that aren’t on their site.

Here are some common services to search for when looking for a roofer:

  • Roof Inspections
  • Leak Repair
  • General Repair & Maintenance
  • Ventilation
  • Roof Cleaning
  • Storm Response Services

Qualifications & Experience

The last thing you need when facing roofing issues is an inexperienced contractor to make the problem worse. Most reliable contractors will have some statement of experience, certifications, training, or qualifications that makes them the best option for the job.

Quotes & Pricing

Before booking any services, always discuss the contractors’ quotes so you know exactly what you’re paying for, and how much. Make sure you understand all the additional costs that might be incurred throughout the process. Collecting “bids” or quotes from the pool of contractor options is important for later price comparisons.

Do keep in mind, however, that pricing isn’t everything. Just because a contractor might offer you the lowest price, doesn’t always mean it has the best value. Figuring out which contractor delivers the best “bang for your buck” depends on more than just the quote itself.

Reviews, References, & Past Work

When it comes to roofing, having reputable reviews is more important than ever. Hiring a contractor with no reviews, or sketchy reviews can lead to you getting scammed.

Always look for testimonials on their site or sift through their Google reviews. If they have readily available project photos on their site, even better!

If you’re part of a Homeowner’s Association, this is a great way to ask for recommendations from fellow members.

Know the Timeline

No one wants to wait more than a week to have their roof fixed. Make sure you ask for an estimate of the length of time for the project, and get it in some form of writing, so that both parties are held accountable. On average, a new roof installation takes anywhere from two to three days, so keep this in mind when discussing timelines with your contractor. Remember, though, that external delays such as bad weather or supply delays can alter the estimate but shouldn’t be overly burdensome.
